Photodynamic Therapy

How it works:

Unfortunately after years of lying out in the sun we are now seeing the effects of the sun damage that was caused to our skin. Sun damage not only causes unsightly lesions termed Actinic Keratosis on our face, hands and other areas with repeated exposure to the sun, but can lead to deadly cancers without proper treatment. Until now, liquid nitrogen was the most commonly used treatment for Actinic Keratosis which often leave white scars in the treated region.

At Renu Laser & Skin Care Centre, we have the newest technology available with FDA approval for treating Actinic Keratosis called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with Levulan. Levulan is taken up by the rapidly growing cells that are often linked to pre-cancers and are then activated by the appropriate light source, which results in the destruction of those targeted cells. A rejuvenation effect is also seen with PDT treatments including an overall improvement in the tone and texture of the skin resulting in a more youthful glowing skin.

Patients are expected to see varying results depending on the severity of their condition. Results shown include complete resolution of visible AK lesions as well as reduction in future AK lesion development. Maximal results are generally shown after three treatments. Because these lesions have developed over several years of damage and changes will likely continue to occur, maintenance treatments are recommended to keep the skin free of pre-cancers as well as keeping the skin healthy and glowing.

Following PDT, the treated areas can appear red with some peeling for 3-7days. People often liken it to looking like a sunburn. All potential responses will be discuss in detail prior to treatments
