Acne Therapy

How it works:

Most of us know that even a few pimples can be devastating to our self esteem but can also leave lasting reminders with scarring that can take years to fade. Treatment of acne is very individual and can include a combination of modalities such as topical creams, antibiotics as well as the newest treatment available, Photodynamic therapy with Levulan.

Until recently, accutane was the most used drug to treat severe acne conditions. We now have a new and effective way to treat varying forms of acne without the systemic effects seen with accutane. The new advanced treatment called Photodynamic therapy is used in conjunction with the application of Levulan with great success for those individuals suffering from acne.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the used of a blue light source to activate a compound called Levulan, which is applied to the skin prior to exposure to the blue light. The targeted cells and bacteria causing the acne on the skin surface are eliminated. Also a reduction of the sebum production by the sebaceous glands helps to prevent further outbreaks from occurring.

Dr. Decker can assess the degree of acne and provide the best possible options available to suit your needs.

Patients are expected to see varying results depending on the severity of their condition. Results shown include complete resolution of active acne as well as reduction in future breakouts. Maximal response is generally shown after three treatments.

Patients may also see improvements of large pores and overall tone and texture of the skin with repeated treatments.

Following PDT, the treated areas can appear red with some peeling for 3-7days. People often liken it to looking like a sunburn. All potential responses will be discussed in detail prior to treatments.
